How to use a birth plan as a conversation tool
A written birth plan can help communicate your preferences before labor. Here is a simple way to prepare one and discuss it with your care team.
A birth plan is a written outline of what you would like during labor and delivery. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends reviewing it with your obstetrician before your due date and keeping room for changes when circumstances call for them.
Start with what matters most
Write down the people you hope to have with you, how you prefer to receive updates, and questions about comfort, labor, delivery, and newborn care. Keep the most important preferences easy to find, such as on a one-page summary.
Bring it to an appointment
Ask which requests are possible in your setting and what might change in an urgent situation. A conversation before the day of birth can help your team understand your priorities.
Leave room for change
A birth plan cannot guarantee a particular outcome. It can still help you express what matters to you and ask how decisions will be discussed if plans change.
